A 2018 OECD report cited “mandatory and extended clinical practice” as one of three elements of teacher training common to the best-performing countries in the world. However in Brazil, a vast majority of new teachers graduate from undergraduate teacher programs and begin their first jobs having never stood in front of a classroom. Co.letivo, a program of Instituto Canoa, aims to build a proven residency model that can be tailored and co-designed with states, municipalities and private-sector groups in Brazil as a vehicle to recruit and develop outstanding teachers for high-need subjects and locations in public schools in Brazil.
In the Canoa Institute, we believe that the teaching profession moves forward when there is connection between theory and practice; that every human being is capable of wonderful things; that learning happens when we feel safe and that education frees and is a vector for reducing inequalities.
