We exist for the visionaries, connectors and advocates. Together, we’re transforming imagined futures into shared realities.

Vision

We imagine a future where learning sparks opportunity and thriving belongs to everyone.

Mission

We support organizations and their collaborative efforts to build and strengthen equity in education, enabling all learners to thrive.

Each day, we aspire to be...

Compassionate Changemakers

Compassion for our fellow human beings drives us to action, and we push ourselves to create deeper, more positive impact with every action we take.

Inclusive Collaborators

We know we don’t have all the answers. Because of this, we actively seek multiple viewpoints and openly share our knowledge with others.

Courageous Learners

We are open-minded and curious. We take courageous action and, given the complexity of the systems in which we work, we accept and understand that failures are inevitable and we will learn from them.

Our Commitment

Justice, equity, diversity and inclusion principles inform what we do and what we aspire to achieve. They guide our beliefs, drive our strategy, and shape our culture, operations and actions.

We believe that equitable access to learning is essential for healthy, just, and thriving societies. Everyone—regardless of race, background, gender, or ability—deserves the opportunity to learn and shape their own future.

The reality, however, is that there continues to be systemic barriers that prevent all learners from thriving. We work alongside changemakers to break down these barriers, ensuring those most affected lead the way in creating solutions for all learners and their families.

As a funder, we recognize our privilege and the power imbalances in our work. We are committed to self-reflection, fostering open conversations, and continuously learning. Within our organization, we strive to create a space where all perspectives are valued. Externally, we strive to reimagine and promote more just philanthropic models that help build equitable systems where learners are represented, empowered, and able to live dignified, fulfilling lives.

    Meet Our Team

Our team brings diverse experience across the public, social and commercial sectors.

    Our Story

    Founding of an Idea

Inspired by eBay’s ability to connect people, in 1998 Pierre and Pam Omidyar co-founded a foundation, renamed The Omidyar Family Foundation in 2000, to explore and support complex issues impacting communities and families.

    Pioneering a New Model

In 2004, The Omidyar Family Foundation evolves to become Omidyar Network, pioneering a new philanthropic model that set out to support market-based approaches with the potential for large-scale, catalytic impact in addition to nonprofit approaches.

    Exploring the Education Sector

Starting in 2009, Omidyar Network makes initial education investments and grants. By 2013, ON commits to a dedicated education focus.

    Expanding Investment

Following initial education investments across Africa, between 2014-2019 our work expands into India, Latin America and later, the U.S.

    Launching Imaginable Futures

In 2020, Imaginable Futures spins out of the Education Initiative of Omidyar Network with a goal of unlocking human potential through learning and with a hybrid funding structure of impact investing with venture philanthropy.

    Evolving Our Work

Through the global pandemic in 2020, IF expands to also address wellbeing and emergency support. In 2021, IF evolves its strategy to place greater focus within Brazil, Kenya and South Africa and the U.S. and starts using more systems thinking tools.

    Integrating Collaborations

In 2025, with more intention towards collaborative, co-funding opportunities, IF aligns under a new organizational strategy that sunsets new for-profit investment and work in South Africa to move toward a greater focus on field strengthening in Brazil, Kenya and the U.S.
